10-Month-Old Self-Feeding: Supporting Independence (and Embracing the Mess!)
At 10 months, independence is in full swing.
They want the spoon. The bowl. Possibly the entire plate.
Self-feeding now is their way of highlighting their autonomy. Hard as it is to let them go for it, the long play is worth it (reading between the lines here means that if you want them to stay clean for a particular meal, you control the spoon. But for 90% of meals, you might need to let them steer for their long-term benefits)
You might notice:
• Clear food preferences
• Determined self-scooping
• Throwing (yes, that too)
• Slower, more deliberate chewing
Mess often increases before it decreases. It’s all part of healthy learning and development.
Ways you can support independence:
• Offering pre-loaded spoons
• Serving manageable portions
• Staying calm about mess, drops and smears
Eating is sensory. It’s motor learning. It's a curiosity.
Progress doesn’t look tidy. One day it’ll be a yoghurt stain on their elbow, and the next it’ll be banana to your eyebrow. This is why they’re so cute- because Mother Nature wants us to immediately forgive their sweet little faces. 💛
