18-Month-Old Not Eating Much? How to Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods
If your 18-month-old isn’t finishing meals, you’re not alone. Appetite often dips at this stage due to slower growth and increased independence.
This is where what they eat becomes more important than how much.
When intake is unpredictable, prioritise nutrient-dense foods- foods that deliver the most nutrition in smaller volumes.
Focus on:
- Iron-rich foods (beef, chicken, lentils) for energy and development
- Healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, full-fat dairy) for brain growth and satiety
- Protein to support steady energy
- Complex carbohydrates for sustained fuel
Rather than relying on large meals, think in terms of small, powerful eating opportunities across the day.
For example:
- A few spoonfuls of a Le Puree Beef and Pea Stew
- Our smoothie cubes, combined with, milk, yoghurt, and a banana
- Soft finger foods that combine multiple nutrients in one bite
These options help ensure your toddler is still meeting their needs- even if they only eat small amounts at a time.
Behaviourally, this is also a time to trust your toddler’s appetite. Avoid pressuring or chasing bites- this can increase resistance and affect their long-term trust with mealtimes.
Instead, focus on quality, consistency, and calm mealtimes.
Because at 18 months, feeding isn’t about perfect plates, it’s about meeting needs in a very busy, very curious little human.
