8 Month Old Self-Feeding Guide: Benefits, Milestones & Tips
Eight months is prime self-feeding season.
You might notice a stronger desire to grab the spoon, swipe at the bowl, or insist on doing it themselves. Thatโs not defiance - itโs development.
Babies are refining:
โข Hand-to-mouth coordination
โข Their core stability
โข Early pincer grip beginnings
โข Chewing and lateral tongue movement
Pre-loaded spoons are wonderful here. So are soft finger foods cut appropriately.
Yes, itโs messier. Yes, itโs slower.
But self-feeding builds confidence, coordination, and body awareness.
You can still support by alternating spoon-feeding and self-feeding if that feels right. It doesnโt have to be all or nothing.
Skill-building is happening every time they grasp, miss, try again.
