8 Month Old Self-Feeding Guide: Benefits, Milestones & Tips

Eight months is prime self-feeding season.

You might notice a stronger desire to grab the spoon, swipe at the bowl, or insist on doing it themselves. Thatโ€™s not defiance - itโ€™s development.

Babies are refining:
โ€ข Hand-to-mouth coordination
โ€ข Their core stability
โ€ข Early pincer grip beginnings
โ€ข Chewing and lateral tongue movement

Pre-loaded spoons are wonderful here. So are soft finger foods cut appropriately.

Yes, itโ€™s messier. Yes, itโ€™s slower.

But self-feeding builds confidence, coordination, and body awareness.

You can still support by alternating spoon-feeding and self-feeding if that feels right. It doesnโ€™t have to be all or nothing.

Skill-building is happening every time they grasp, miss, try again.

Progress often looks like yoghurt in their eyebrows or avocado in their hair ๐Ÿ’›
