8 Month Old Self-Feeding Guide: Benefits, Milestones & Tips
Eight months is prime self-feeding season.
You might notice a stronger desire to grab the spoon, swipe at the bowl, or insist on doing it themselves. That’s not defiance - it’s development.
Babies are refining:
• Hand-to-mouth coordination
• Their core stability
• Early pincer grip beginnings
• Chewing and lateral tongue movement
Pre-loaded spoons are wonderful here. So are soft finger foods cut appropriately.
Yes, it’s messier. Yes, it’s slower.
But self-feeding builds confidence, coordination, and body awareness.
You can still support by alternating spoon-feeding and self-feeding if that feels right. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
Skill-building is happening every time they grasp, miss, try again.
Progress often looks like yoghurt in their eyebrows or avocado in their hair 💛
