Baby Poop After Starting Solids: What’s Normal & When to Worry
Let’s talk about something every 8-month parent’s favourite topic…poop!
Once solids are well underway, changes are completely expected. You might notice your bub’s poop changes include:
• Thicker texture
• Stronger smell
• More defined colour shifts (depending on what they ate)
• Changes in frequency- could be much more, or much less often
Iron-rich foods can darken babies' poop. Green veg can tint things, well…green. This is normal.
Constipation can pop up around this age too. Offering water with meals, including fibre-rich foods (like pear, prunes, lentils), and adding healthy fats can help keep things moving!
What’s not normal? Hard pellet-like stools with obvious discomfort, blood, or persistent diarrhoea…those are worth checking in about.
Otherwise? If they’re happy, feeding well, and growing at the same rate as before, trust that their new rhythm will show itself soon enough, and the journey to solids is like any other- very much not linear!
