From Baby to Toddler: How to Encourage Independent Eating at Every Stage
At 13 months, your baby is stepping confidently into toddlerhood - and that includes wanting more control at mealtimes. You’ll likely notice a strong desire to self-feed, use utensils (with varying success!), and explore food with all their senses.
This is the perfect time to lean into finger foods and soft, scoopable meals. Textures should now be more varied- think soft chunks, shredded meats, and mixed textures rather than purees alone.
Meals like:
- Coconut Rice Chai Pudding
- Soft veggie fritters (allow little ones to practise coordination while still getting balanced nutrition)
Expect mess- it’s not just inevitable, it’s developmental. Squishing, dropping, and smearing food all help build motor skills and sensory confidence.
Nutritionally, toddlers still need iron, healthy fats, and protein to support rapid growth.
Including foods like:
- Lentils
- Beef
- Eggs
- Avocado
in easy-to-grab formats can help meet these needs
At this stage, eating is as much about learning as it is about nourishment, so offer variety, stay relaxed, and let your toddler take the lead.
