How Daylight Saving Affects Your Baby’s Sleep (And What to Do)

Daylight saving has now ended across parts of Australia, and while you might have enjoyed the extra hour of sleep, your baby may be telling a different story.

If your little one has suddenly started waking earlier, skipping naps, or becoming unsettled at bedtime, the time change is likely why. Their internal clock is still running on the old schedule.

With the clocks moving back one hour, mornings are lighter earlier and evenings get darker sooner. For babies (especially between 6–12 months) who rely on consistent routines, even this small shift can feel like a big disruption.

A baby who used to wake at 7am might now be starting the day at what feels like 6am. Bedtime can feel earlier too, even if nothing else has changed.

The good news: this phase is temporary.

Most babies adjust within a few days, they just need a little time for their body clock to catch up.

To help things along, you can gently shift your baby’s routine forward. Moving naps, feeds and bedtime 10–15 minutes later, from their new timings each day can help ease them into the new rhythm. This means that if they’re suddenly requiring their 7am milk feed at 6am… push this to 6.15am, where possible. The same goes for naps and bath time.

Keeping your bedtime routine consistent is just as important. Familiar cues like a bath, milk feed, book and cuddle help signal that it’s time for sleep, regardless of what the clock says.

Morning light also plays a big role. Opening the curtains or getting outside early in the day can help reset their internal clock more quickly.

Over the next few days, you might notice earlier wake-ups, shorter naps, or a slightly fussier bedtime. This is completely normal.

With a bit of consistency (and patience), most babies settle into the new routine within 3–5 days, and things tend to return to normal just as quickly as they changed.
