Toddler Not Eating at 18 Months? Understanding Distraction and “Food Noise”

At 18 months, your toddler is busy. Like, really, really busy. The world has opened up- walking turns into running, curiosity is endless, and sitting still for meals? Suddenly not so appealing. You may notice your toddler getting distracted at the table, eating a few bites, then wanting to leave, play, or move on.

This is often what parents describe as “food noise” - when everything around your toddler feels more interesting than what’s on their plate. Importantly, this isn’t a feeding failure, it’s development.

At this age, toddlers are driven by exploration, not routine. Their appetite can feel unpredictable, and full meals may become less consistent. Instead of long, focused eating, you might see short bursts of intake throughout the day.

Developmentally, we should be expecting them to sit quietly at a table for one minute per year of their age. So at 18 months…? You could realistically expect them to sit for a grand total of 1.5 minutes.

Do you feel seen? No stat has ever made me feel more seen, so I hope it’s validating for you too!

To support a longer stretch somehow:

  • Keep meals structured but low-pressure
  • Reduce distractions where possible (screens, toys at the table)
  • Accept that some meals will be small
  • Open discussion at their level of language and engagement, and make it not about the meal itself, but about a rainbow, a bunny or a toy they love (for example).

Offering visually appealing, easy-to-eat options can help bring attention back to food. Think colourful plates, varied textures, and manageable portions.

Le Puree toddler meals and finger foods are particularly helpful here- designed to be nutrient-dense, soft, and engaging, even when attention spans are short.

Aim for an extra minute than their ‘expectation’, and consider yourself a winner if you manage to achieve it. You won’t be long lunching with your bub just yet- but they’re your meal companion in training.
