Tiny Teeth, Big Bites: Safe Foods for 1–2-Year-Olds Learning to Chew

As chewing becomes stronger and molars begin appearing, food textures can continue to progress.

For 1-2 years:
• Bite-sized, manageable pieces
• Thinly sliced fruits (halve grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthwise)
• Soft-cooked vegetables
• Small sandwich pieces
• Flaked fish and shredded meats

Food should still be soft enough to chew comfortably, but it no longer needs to be overly mashed.

Continue avoiding whole nuts, hard raw veg, popcorn, and large round items- these won't be safe until years down the track. You’ll see more confident chewing and clearer preferences.

Molars and teeth are painful, so give them a little space from a nutrient dense meal when pain really kicks in. Lean in to yoghurts, chilled soups or broths to manage their gum pain. The pain will pass, but so will the cuddles so lap those up while they’re on offer! 💛
