Toddler Food Refusal at 15 Months: Why It Happens and How to Handle It
At 15 months, your toddler is discovering something powerful… choice.
And with that comes the sudden appearance of strong food preferences- or outright refusals.
One day they love broccoli, the next it’s on the floor.
This shift isn’t about disliking food, it’s about independence and control. Your toddler is learning they can say “no,” and mealtimes are a very effective place to practice. They can’t control what they wear, which tupperware you hand them as a toy, which playground they head to for the day… but they can refuse to eat something they decide to say no to.
The key here is consistency without pressure. Continue offering a variety of foods, even the ones they reject. Research shows toddlers often need 10–15 exposures before accepting a new food.
Keep textures varied- soft chunks, mixed meals, and finger foods are ideal. Toddler meals are perfect here, combining familiar flavours with gentle variety to keep exposure high without overwhelming your little one.
Let them self-feed, explore, shampoo some avocado into their hair or even reject… It's all part of building a healthy relationship with food.
