Transitioning from Milk to Solid Foods With Your 12-Month-Old
Happy one year (or almost)! Somehow you now have a toddler!
After 12 months, a few gentle shifts happen. Milk (breastmilk or formula) is no longer the primary source of nutrition, food is. Meals and snacks take centre stage, with milk becoming complementary rather than leading.
You might also notice a few things like:
• Stronger opinions at the table
• More independence
• Clear food preferences
• Shorter attention spans during meals
Growth naturally slows after the first year, so appetite can look smaller or more variable. That’s normal. This transition isn’t about a dramatic overnight change, but it’s gradual.
Aiming for three meals and two snacks is about right at this age. Shared family foods will always be the goal from here on out.
You’re not feeding a baby anymore, you’re guiding a small, capable eater learning autonomy. 💛
