What to Feed an 8 Month Old: Essential Nutrients for Growing Babies
At 8 months, solids are doing more heavy lifting (nutritionally). Milk is still the unsung hero, but food is no longer just practice. Some food is likely making its way into their mouth, and these nutrients really start to count!
Three nutrients to gently prioritise:
Iron: for brain development through a crucial mechanism of oxygen transport (think beef, lamb, chicken, lentils.)
Zinc - supports immunity and growth (often found in red meat, legumes, dairy.)
Healthy fats - essential for brain development (avocado, olive oil, nut butters, full-fat yoghurt.)

This doesn’t mean complicated meals. It means intentional building blocks.
A spoon of lamb purée with olive oil.
Avocado alongside shredded chicken.
Yoghurt with nut butter stirred through.
Balanced, varied, and responsive.
At this age, intake starts to matter more. So it’s time to implement the division of responsibility.
Your job is to provide nutritious food, with variety enough that you trust they’ll find something on the plate which is accessible to them.
Their job is choosing what and how much to eat.
Sitting back after you fulfil your role, and watching them approach their role can be where the magic happens 💛
