Why Family Meals Matter for Toddlers: Building Healthy Eating Habits at 20 Months

At 20 months, your toddler is watching everything you do- especially at the table.

This is a powerful stage for shaping eating habits, because toddlers learn less from what we say, and more from what they see. Sitting down together for meals isn’t just about convenience- it’s one of the most effective ways to encourage food acceptance, routine, and positive behaviour around eating.

When your toddler sees you eating a variety of foods, they’re more likely to explore those foods themselves. Even if they don’t try something right away, repeated exposure in a shared environment builds familiarity and reduces hesitation over time.

Family meals also support:

  • Language development (through conversation)
  • Routine and predictability
  • Reduced picky eating behaviours

At this age, your toddler can eat most of what the family is eating, just with slight adjustments to texture, portion size and additives like salt.

Things like bolognese with a soft pasta, lamb chops offered on the bone or in thin strips, baked veggies in shapes they can tolerate or even a textured stew or soup- these are all approachable meals for your little one. Just remove their portion before adding salt for the rest of the fam (where possible), and serve in as many components as suit their needs.

Even if your toddler only eats a small amount, the experience of sitting, watching, and participating is just as important.

Because at 20 months, mealtimes are about more than food, they’re about connection, learning, and long-term habits.
