Benefits of Liver for Bub!
Author: Jessica Kurosaki, Accredited Practising Dietitian
Liver is a powerful ingredient, packed with nutrients for the whole family. Bub doesn’t have to wait to start enjoying the benefits. They could really use this powerhouse food in this major growth spurt of life.
That’s why we’ve included it as often as we can in our recipes- but let’s talk about why it’s so great (and what to watch out for).
Liver is an excellent source of:
- Iron
- Zinc
- B Vitamins
Together, these vitamins support the:
- Production of healthy red blood cells (goodbye anaemia!) ♥️
- Contribute to brain development (hello genius baby!) 🧠
- They also support growth and healing and have immune boosting features (goodbye winter colds!) 🤒
Liver is also abundant in vitamin A, which promotes healthy eyesight and supports a robust immune system. Great news!
The less-than-great-news about Vitamin A is that it can be toxic when eaten in excessive quantities, so we need to be careful about how much to serve bubs and cubs.
Don’t fret- we’ve done the calculations, and SPOILERS: everything’s okay.
You can get all the goodness of liver from our delicious recipes, like:
- Loaded liver with pumpkin apple kale
- Pumpkin, cauli, carrot, chicken and liver, fennel
- Luka's liver pate spread
- Beef and liver meatballs
You can safely serve your bub 1 serve of the purees or the meatballs (100g) in a day without exceeding the daily recommendations.
Luka’s liver pate has the most wonderful dose of liver, but please note that the serving size is 33g (one cube). Any more than this will exceed the safe levels of Vitamin A, and is not recommended.
All of these foods could be served 1-2 times per week for a great dose of those health benefits.
So what’s the wrap up?
Be a liver, not a hater. Get it?
